O Viridissima Virga Square Scarf
This luscious silk is named after a hymn by St. Hildegard von Bingen, who was a brilliant polymath abbess, mystic, and Doctor of the Church. She is known for her musical skill, natural knowledge, and inspired wisdom and prudence. She was a most trusted advisor for world leaders at the time of her life; she offered the tenderest consolation of a mother—and she did not suffer foolishness of any kind. With imagery that renders the music like an illuminated manuscript for the ears, Hildegard’s hymn celebrates the Blessed Mother as the “branch of freshest green” from which our salvation bursts forth like a tree in springtime blossom.
As for the design, the olive background is representative of the life of the Holy Spirit, just like in traditional icons. The burgundy roses have a stained glass, Marian solemnity—and I love the ancient “sub rosa” tradition of secrets being kept and revealed “under the rose.” With that in mind, the deep blue center that is under the roses is a place of sacred mystery for the Immaculate Conception and connects to the tradition of the enclosed garden in Annunciation images. The white flowers are olive blossoms for the flowering of our salvation through Mary by Christ. And it’s a good way to remember the Garden of Gethsemane and Christ’s heroic liberation of us from sin and His Eastertide victory.
This scarf is a heavenly way to recall heavenly things.
Made from pure silk and printed using permanent reactive inks that bond with the cell of the fiber. All silk is washed prior to being cut, sewn and shipped.
