Righteous Deborah Icon Giclée Print

from $24.00

Print of Righteous Deborah Icon.

Because there is no popular ancient icon of the Prophetess Deborah, I wrote this icon combining elements from other traditional icons and details from other old images of the saint.

I based the clothing colors and styles as well as the crown and uncovered hair on the oldest image available to me, a medieval manuscript illustration. Then I incorporated the tree and throne from icons of St. Joseph and St. Catherine of Alexandria to place Deborah in judgment under the tree, just like how she is said to have guided the Chosen People in Scripture. If you look closely at the throne, you can even find gold bees—a special detail of rich spiritual symbolism, since “Deborah” means bee and thus reinforces a very industrious and faithful essence in the icon.

The hand gestures are also significant: Deborah’s right hand is at her heart, a gesture which indicates a prayerful character, and the left hand is palm-out, which indicates righteousness. This is especially fitting for the saint’s title, Righteous Deborah, which I wrote in Hebrew on the icon. I felt called to use the Hebrew title given her role guiding the Chosen People and her placement in the Old Testament.

This icon came out really beautifully; it’s such an honor for me to write icons for you and your loved ones to pray with.
