This is a detail from the traditional icon of the Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple (The Presentation of the Virgin Mary)—the tradition that, in thanksgiving for the gift of their daughter, Sts. Anne and Joachim brought Mary as a small child to the Temple to be consecrated to God.
In the upper corner of this icon is sometimes pictured Mary, seated in the Holy of Holies, or the innermost sanctuary of the Temple where God was present. When I first noticed her there, I couldn’t help but think of the Marian title, Seat of Wisdom, given to her because she held the Christ Child “enthroned” in her body from the moment of the Incarnation. How fitting, then, that there is a tradition that before she was asked to be this Seat of Wisdom, she herself resided in God’s very presence in the Temple!
