St. Anne and the Blessed Virgin Mary Icon - Giclée Print

from $35.00

Print of St. Anne and the Blessed Virgin Mary icon.
Available in 8"x 10" and 12"x16".

The gold background and embellishments of an icon represent the glory of God. Traditional icons show the saints in their glorified, Heavenly form, so the gold helps to remind us that they are now interceding for us from the very light of Divine Love. The bright red garments represent humanity, and this emphasizes Christ’s humanity, that his grandmother and mother were individuals chosen by God for the Redemption of humankind. Bright red pigment like that is also found in connection with saints that are very close to Christ—like the Evangelists. I personally love Mary’s little red shoes. St. Anne and the Virgin Mary are posed in a tender way that is reminiscent of many icons of Mary and the Christ Child, emphasizing the continuity and intention within God’s Will for bringing His Son into the world. The writing is in Greek to be consistent with Byzantine tradition. The words read St. Anne and Mother of God. You can always tell who the Virgin Mary is in an icon by the three stars or flowers on the forehead of her veil and shoulders. These signify Mary’s perpetual virginity before, during, and after the birth of Christ. Mary’s veil is also shaped like the dome of a church, since she is the Mother of the Church and we are her children. The bright white highlights on the face of St. Anne and the Virgin Mary represent the Holy Spirit and how He suffuses them now that they are saints in Heaven. Often you will see a bright red border around an icon. This serves as a visual separation between the Heavenly reality and the earthly reality. I always find it moving to see the saints are reaching out to us, urging us towards Heaven and true Love.
